What to know about the Burlingame minimum wage

Burlingame publishes its arithmetic. The calculation sheet for 2027 takes the San Francisco-area CPI-U for August 2025 (357.99) and August 2026 (370.13), a 3.4% increase, and applies it to the 2026 rate of $17.86 to reach $18.47 from January 1, 2027.2 The formula has no cap, so a high-inflation year passes straight through: the increase on January 1, 2023 was $0.88.1

The wage comes from Ordinance No. 1982, adopted by the City Council on September 21, 2020, which started the city rate at $15.00 on January 1, 2021.4 It covers anyone working two or more hours a week in the city, minors and temporary workers included, and allows no credit for tips. It keeps one reduced rate: learners may be paid 85% of the city minimum for their first 160 hours of work.4

Timing is fixed by the code. The city must publish the next year's rate by October 1 and the posting notice by November 1, which is why the 2027 notice was available in early October 2026.3 Burlingame does not run its own investigations: violations go to the San Mateo County Office of Labor Standards and Enforcement, while the city's Economic Development Division answers questions.1

How the rate changes

Each January 1 the rate rises by the August-to-August change in the San Francisco-area Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U), rounded to the cent, with no cap and no decreases. The city must publish the new rate in a bulletin by October 1 and a posting notice by November 1.

The city announced $18.47 for January 1, 2027, with a calculation sheet showing a 3.4% rise in the CPI-U between August 2025 and August 2026.
